1. Centralized.
2. They forced you to ID yourself with a phone number.
3. They hand your data to third party companies.
4. Most governments were using it to ID people saying bad things about them.
5. Ads and corporative campaigns.
The "S" in "IoT" stands for security.

Just started reading the Foundation series, and have been enjoying it immensely. I have no clue why I didn't pick it up before now.
I guess I'm not going to be running a quick map while I wait for work to get out...
The main reason is because the Markov bots have been playing poorly with Pleroma notices, as they always have been with Mastodon notices, and I don't want to put time into fixing them. Without the bots, there's no reason to keep this instance going.

This is why there's often advice to leave mobile phones at home if you attend a protest. Even if you use a burner phone the geolocation connects one phone to another within the tracking software.
So nobody in 2018 should really be surprised by this. By now the tracking systems will be in a highly advanced stage of development, probably using AI and unsupervised learning to make inferences and guess future movements based on historical patterns.
